FINALLY!

Going back to the original problem with puts():

It seems that if QGPL (wherein lives QPRINT) is in the *LIBL when you SBMJOB, then puts() in a batch job produces a spool file. If it isn't (the default), then puts() in a batch job goes to the bit-bucket.

And thankfully, in the headless server jobs where I need puts() for diagnostics, QGPL is already in the *LIBL.

Ye vish, this was a nasty little mess, with one thing masking another. Stumped for three weeks over something so silly.
