Bob,

You mentioned it's a 520 but not if it's POWER5 or POWER6. This booting from NFS business does require POWER6 or newer and that's a hard requirement.

As to the NFS server side I use that constantly for PTFs but not installs yet. For PTFs I can't see why the server couldn't be Linux. The shares are just public read box stock NFS stuff. If you can create the VOLUME_LIST file by hand (not at all hard) then that seems like it would work. Do be certain that Linux isn't set up for Jumbo frames on the Ethernet side. For booting up off NFS there are some additional requirements so that may actually require an IBM i host.

Hi Pete:

The box I have, is a box I got off Ebay - its not in "prod" use. I'm a
home experimenter...

In the past, I got V5R2, V5R4 images from other people... to learn the
box with - I'm looking for that now.

Actually, I'm looking for V7R1!

Seems like with that version of software, you can actually IPL the
machine, from an NFS server!

It needs to be Power6 or Power7, along with 6.1 or 7.1 of the OS to have IBM I host IBM i. Why not just go to the ess website and download the images?
