I think there is a security compliance involved. If I remember correctly, to
get a C2 certification the computer should remain closed while running.

The Dr. is right as usual. I think this is the only flaw in the design of

the 710, 720, 730, 740 and should have been fixed when they came out with the
"C" models, but unfortunately it wasn't. We have progressed backwards when
it comes to concurrent maintenance in those models, compared to what we had
with similar Power6 & Power7 machines. I understand the airflow issues with
the machine, but they could have put a hinge on the top cover, so the cover
stays over the CPU's keeping airflow moving, but would allow access to the
cards in the back via a hinged opening. It would have increased the cost, but
I think the value of concurrent maintenance surely out weights the cost of
additional components. I hope this is fixed on the Power8 models when they
come out in a few years.

Yes. This is true for 710, 720, 730, and 740 and both the 'B' and 'C'
generations. ***DO NOT REMOVE*** the cover while operating or you'll be able

to remove the cards.... because the power will shut off and do so real sudden-
like. (oops!) IBM chose not to include that capability in the low end
machines.

If you have expansion units such as 5802 or 5877 those units support

concurrent maintenance.
