You really only need to look at the first digit. I wrote several CL programs years ago to perform FTP to Windows and VMS. The second digit was not consistent. All I needed was to look for anything starting with a '5' to know if it failed or a '2' for success. Disadvantage was that this happens after the session stops. Didn't have FTPAPI back then. Would have likely been a lot simpler with FTPAPI.

226 File transfer completed successfully.
