SJL,

Ok, let me try to explain myself beginning with the second point first (and
let me apologize beforehand if I don't express myself clearer, sometimes my
translation circuits do get a little confused).

BTW, there are no subcommands within the FTP script (such as TYPE) which
would specify the CCSID to use...
There is no really need for a subcomand to be sent from inside the FTP
script. CHGFTPA's CTCCSID parameter tries to determine the best "fit"
according to the data in the original ASCII file.

The file being received from SI is a UTF-8 file which, AFAIK, contains only
the basic ASCII characters, so in essence it an ASCII file.

I found a nice IBM TechDoc that explains why this could be so. It appears
that, for example, if there are many exclamation points (!), the system will
try to convert them to pipe characters (|) when doing the ASCII to EBCDIC
conversion. It seems that IBM computers are serious and formal systems, not
very fond to being expressive or emotional themselves :-)

The Techdoc can be found here:

I'm not very expert at FTP but, as I see it, the CRTCCSID(*CALC) seems to
imply that the system tries to assign the CCSID according to the received
data (special characters and so on). Maybe you would like to specify
CRTCCSID(*SYSVAL) instead...
