I dug around a bit - apparently this is no longer a JDBC provider for notes - the last one was a type 2 and required windows.

But there is a notes.jar that purports to do what you need - here is the first of 2 developworks articles -

Maybe one can make java calls into this from RPG, as we see with other stuff like POI and all.
