A recommended best practice is to always use a "shared" session and NOT a
"dedicated" session. Using a shared session allows
- Multiple people to review the system console. Useful when system is in
a dedicated state and the operator calls up the system admin to work on a
problem (or has IBM connect in).
- Allows you to use share the session from a PC where access may be more
ergonomic than where your HMC is mounted. Also allows you to get copy
screens and stuff.

If you try to start a shared session from your PC and it hasn't been
started from the HMC directly first you will get prompted for the password
twice. At that time I would recommend you kill the session on your PC. Go
over to the HMC and start the shared session there. Then return to your
PC and start again.

Also, it would help us if you told us what level of HMC you are running.
On your HMC go to Updates. You may see something like:
HMC Code Level
Version: 7 Build Level: 20100225.1 Serial Number: 103404A
Release: 7.1.0 Base Version: V7R7.1.0 Model Type: eserver xSeries 335
-[7310CR2]-
Service Pack: 1 BIOS: T2E139AUS

Yes, from HMC itself

Hi All,

Yesterday, I faced a strange issue. I was loading cum packages on
system.
System was in restricted state and i was accessing it through HMC.
After
loading packages, Go PTF option 8, my HMC session hung. I waited for
about
half an hour but it didn't come back. Then I disconnected the session
and
login to another HMC session. As I gave the session key, it threw
below
msg
at the bottom of screen.

Then, after an hour one of my colleague, logged in to HMC session and
he
disconnected my session and was able to connect. I checked the history
logs
and found below error messages:
