Is full-screen mode absolutely not negotiable? My personal
recommendation would be to choose fixed size (NOT automatic sizing) in
the font dialog. There should be something there that is sufficiently
legible. Then, the fact that the window doesn't take up the whole
screen should be a bonus, not a liability (because you still have some
visibility to what's behind).

Personally, I use 132-column mode and find it very jarring and ugly if
the screen has to switch to 80-column mode and make the font huge and
stretched out. So I have a fixed size for my font that is comfortable
to read at 132 columns; and let the window shrink automatically when
the display only has 80 columns.

(For anyone who cares, I use IBM3270 at 10x18. This results in a
132-column window that takes up about 90% of my monitor's width. The
window is well over twice as wide as it is high, but the characters
themselves are at what I consider a nice aspect ratio, and a very
legible size.)
