If you are open to a commercial offering, you might want to look at our RPG2SQL Integrator product. It is a set of procedures that let you operate in real time with remote databases, including SQL server.

It has 3 procedures for calling SQL stored procedures, as well as all the other stuff you might want for SQL. It also has extensive Excel functionality that gives you the full scope of Excel's capability if you want.

I've also written an Open Access: RPG Edition handler that lets you do regular IO to the remote database with traditional RPG opcodes - requires you to be on at least 6.1 of the OS.

Check it out at http://www.rjssoftware.com/Products/Catalog/RPG2SQL-Integrator/ or call us at 888.RJS.SOFT - you can ask for me or for Richard (we would be development mostly) or for sales.
