We looked at something like this. Vendors like Vault/400 and whatnot. We
were hoping to bypass manual tape intervention and directly store the data
at Iron Mountain or elsewhere. There were several hurdles:
- Concerns about network traffic.
- Having to use vendor supplied commands to save/restore versus IBM
supplied ones.
- Cost

Switching to BRMS really reduced the amount of time our operator was
spending in the morning tape routine.

Vendor supplied stuff like this scares me to death. Having to deal with
that really early on in a new release of OS does not appeal to me. The
last thing in the world I want is some vendor who brags that they still
support V2R3 but wants you to let them know if their stuff works on the
latest os (since they don't have a machine new enough to run something
even 2 releases back).
