My thinking is that the ARP was populated with HTTPD-related information because of high (rather, recen) activity, and that the TELNET data had been flushed for the reverse reason. Of course protocol has nothing to do with ARP. (Or did I say that backwards? :)

I don't think a problem with arp tables can adequately explain why
telnet worked byt http didn't. Both telnet and http function above the
network layer which relies on the data link layer. If there was a
problem with the data link layer it would effect both of these
protocols. Of course if it was an arp table problem on a limited
number of hosts and http and telnet connections were not tried from the
same host then it could be an arp table issue.

I don't have any good ideas for what the cause would have been but I am
curious to know if you find out.

The system maintains an ARP (address resolution protocol) table that
tells it how to connect to other servers. My guess is that the ARP
needed to be refreshed. On a UNIX system that would be command:
arp -d
But I am unsure what command might do the equivalent on i.

Last night we put in all new switches, and quickly replugged the IBM i

Ethernet cable, and the system went on running, telnet for sure.

However, the http servers no longer connected. This morning I
re-started all the HTTP servers, but we were still unable to connect.

I then did an IPL which brought everything back up.
