As a followup, I did this upgrade yesterday afternoon. From start to
finish, the entire thing took only 20 minutes. We're talking ENDFAXSPT,
ENDSBS of the subsystems involved, DLTLICPGM of the old version, RSTLICPGM
of the new version, PTFs, and STRFAXSPT afterward. I was pleasantly
surprised at how speedy it was and everything worked without issue
afterward.

Then I looked for updated documentation. All I could find was stuff related
to Version 4 and dated May 1999. So I opened a PMR. IBM is pointing me to
the 1999 documentation. Guess there were a few too many layoffs in
Rochester. No time for that stuff. :)

Pete,

Thanks, I will do the install of 5798-FAX V5R7 before the OS upgrade
(duh!).

I found this page:

http://www-912.ibm.com/s_dir/slkbase.NSF/0/5e6906ff78dec9dc8625672a004ac41d?OpenDocument#_Section3

and expanded the Update section. I already have all the PTFs except for
the 4 for V5R7 of 5798-FAX.

There's a boatload of steps. :) There are no hardware changes, just this
software. Will I really need to reconfigure with CFGFAXSRV afterward? I
assume so.

Jeff,

You definitely need Fax V5R7 for IBM i 7.1. You can optionally use
Fax V5R7 or FAX V5R2 on IBM i 6.1. There are a bunch of PTFs needed for
FAX
on both 6.1 and 7.1 that I would HIGHLY recommend you get for your
machine.
There are some programs that won't convert to 6.1 (Re-encapsulate) unless
you have the PTFs which provide a few new copies of the programs with
observability/creation data.

IN addition, if you are converting from Power5 hardware to Power6/7
hardware you will need some of those PTFs for the modem support required
by
FAX/400.

I have had absolutely no problems with Fax at any of the above
scenarios after getting all the PTFs.

Subject: V7R1 with 5798-FAX

All,

I'm getting ready to go to V7R1 and stumbled onto something yesterday.

I use 5798-FAX at V5R2. I'm signed up for various PTF emails from IBM. I
got one for "System i Recommended Fixes - IBM Facsimile Support for
iSeries"
that listed PTFs for 5798-FAX V5R2 and 5798-FAX V5R7. I didn't even know
there was a V5R7!

Anyway, the email says that 5798-FAX V5R7 is required for V7R1 of the OS.

Can anyone confirm or deny? There is no 5798-FAX period on the V7R1
install
DVDs (nor on the V6R1 install DVDs either, for that matter).

Thanks.
