As a stop gap measure, we are using Google's custom search engine service.
If you know of an easy to use, open source, search engine ... please contact support@midrange.com.
So what you note is still a possible solution for that?

You didn't mention *how* the branches are connected, but if you switched
from MPLS to VPN, you may need to lower the MTU to account for the
encryption overhead.
