Yep...this process is a little on the "screw around with a lot of tests"
procedure. I finally got a graphic put on my overlay yesterday using
MS Publisher, which I know almost nothing about.

I had done a few simple things a few years ago just using plain old
DDS and that seem to work about as well as all this other stuff.

The IBM Knowledge Base has a few articles on how to attach a few
of the problems. Getting the AFP drivers working took a while to get
just right.

For graphics, Paint Shop Pro. Lining things up is always an
adventure. To get a nice 6 or 8 lines-per-inch spacing, experiment
with a few lines that you think might work, then print them out.
Once you find a spacing that works, just copy those lines to wherever
you need them!

I've also had good luck scanning in an existing printed overlay, and
using that to guide me.

For pure text (ie boilerplate on the backside of a document),
Microsoft Word or any text editor.
