Just off on a tangent here, and really no dig this time James, but are you
running preV5 software on that? If so, then WRKLICINF shouldn't be such a
concern and if your vendor software (if any) doesn't care about serial
number, then why not just get a different 40S ready to go? Just a WAG but
isn't the shipping probably where the bulk of your expense is going to
come in? If it gets to the point where you need to bring in IBM at
$250/hour it might pay you to pursue that avenue.

Now, if you want the "dig" I could recommend getting supported hardware
and a maintenance contract on it so you could concentrate on enhancing
product.

I do see where V5R1 was the last hurrah for the 40S but I'm willing to bet
that you kept it below that so that you could compile down to V3R2.
