The ideal situation would be to have a WRKJOBSCDE OUTPUT(*OUTFILE) option, but that doesn't exist.

And the examples of that API list about 6 other APIs I would need to use to access the user space the output is sent to. The only examples provided were in RPG, as well. I'm a Java and COBOL developer and don't know a lick of RPG.
The examples to use the API seemed way more complicated than the RPG that I could understand.

The quickest and easiest way I could come up with was to dump the printout into a temp file.

I can send a post to the COBOL-L or JAVA400-L list to keep the board clean and organized, if you have any suggestions.

Hi Jason,

The output of WRKJOBSCDE is not meant to be put into a file or processed
by a program. While you'll doubtless learn that you can workaround this
with CL's CPYSPLF or QShell's catsplf, it's still not recommended,
because IBM does not consider printouts to be programmatic interfaces.

IBM works hard to keep software compatible from each release to the
next, but they don't put any efforts to keep printouts in the same
format. If they change a printout, it'll break your software if you're
processing the printout in a program.

The IBM-blessed way to read/process the job schedule entries in a
program is the List Job Schedule Entries (QWCLSCDE) API.

My test code is as follows:
PGM
CRTPF FILE(QTEMP/TESTOVR) RCDLEN(132)
OVRDBF FILE(QSYSPRT) TOFILE(QTEMP/TESTOVR)
WRKJOBSCDE OUTPUT(*PRINT)
ENDPGM

However, the job fails with:
CPF9850 - Override of printer file QSYSPRT not allowed.

Any ideas why this simple override is not working?
