Why don't you use a version of Dieter's trigger idea, but with a "additional
data" file that can be accessed with data from your main transaction file
(e.g., by transaction number). That way, you could use a trigger for
updating this file with the needed info (transaction number, mod.
date/timestamp, user, etc) and, for the few programs that need to use the
new info you could use a join file (trans. file + new file).

Later on, when you are ready for the big change, you can update your main
file info with the new file data.
