So where is the x'4a' coming from? At what stage of your program does it become x'4a' instead of x'ba'?

You say you have a file that contains a translation table for special characters in XML. But, your program isn't writing to that file is it? It's just using it to convert certain characters to XML entities. So how can you say it's x'4a' in the file?

I'm a bit lost.

Hi All,

I am creating XML documents on the i using the CGIDEV2 library. I am
having problems with special characters. So I created a file to
lookup the character and return the translation. For example if I
lookup 1/4 it returns&#188. The problem I have is that when someone
enters a left bracket for example, the display shows "[" correctly
but in the file it shows a cent sign "¢". The hex in the file is "4A"
which is indeed a cent sign.

The display file has a CCSID of 37, as does the field in the file and
my lookup file. Can someone explain to me why this is translated like
this?

Thanks very much...
- Steve
