Cisco IOS has been around longer than I can remember. IOS originally was
Internetwork Operating System used on their routers. They now call
their switch software IOS. IBM introduced i5/OS, rebranding the
original OS400 that ran on the AS400. (Operating System 400 on
Application Server 400)

The IBM midrange line introduced in 1988 has always been an application
server. Just the applications have move from Terminal based to
Client/Server, to Browser based. The old Terminal stuff is still the
most stable and secure way performing data processing. (At least in MY
opinion.)

Call it what you want, it is just a highly evolved platform that has
been around for a mere 22 years.
