2 - If he has an invalid host table entry that could explain the ping
failure.
I suppose so. But host table isn't DNS... and surely the guy would
notice that PING is showing the wrong IP address, and ask more focused
questions? Or if DNS is failing altogether, he'd notice the difference
between no ping response, and an 'Unknown host' error?
Or have we been using Windows so long that we completely ignore all
error messages and chalk them up it "it failed"?!
