I've investigated the mail delivery order issue and have come up with some results.

Since I'm discussing mail provider issues ... another thing I noticed is that some folks are using backup MX services that (appear to) do nothing but tell a sender to resend.

My server gets a message such as "Deferred: 451 4.3.0 Please deliver example.com emails directly to primary MX that is up at this moment".

PLEASE ... only use a backup MX is you absolutely know what you are doing and willing to put in the effort to properly manage them.

Mail server's have a very low tolerance for failure ... so if my server can't connect immediately to your server, it will try backup MX's.

Also, regarding backup MX's, make sure all your MX's know about all your users and all your security policies ... because if your backup MX doesn't know a specific user exists, your messages might start bouncing and your subscription will be disabled.
