Got Jack's reply and haven't received the original yet.

If you are using a tape library then you may also get an additional tape
device configured also. On our system when I run
wrkcfgsts *dev tap*
I get
Description Status
TAPMLB02 VARIED ON
TAPMLB04 VARIED ON
TAPVRT01 VARIED ON
TAP02 VARIED OFF
TAP03 VARIED OFF
TAP04 VARIED OFF

Under normal situations you do NOT use those devices. They are reserved
for very special occasions - for example, restoring your LIC and OS from
tape before there's enough OS to know how to process a tape library.

Some tape devices can be configure in both "random" and "sequential" mode.
"Random" is the media library or "MLB". "Sequential" is the "tradition"
or non MLB. Some tape devices, like the monster we have, won't allow you
to configure it in sequential mode and won't recognize the 'TAP03' type
stuff unless you are doing one of those restores of LIC and OS previously
mentioned.

In SST you will see that they occupy the same position, but use different
resource names. Therefore only 1 can be varied on at a time.

If you are using BRMS, you want the Media Library (MLB) one.
