RUNJVA will create a new job on each call and therefore a new instance
of the JVM each time Brad.

I understand that RUNJVA will create a new job, but I still question it creating a new JVM instance, because a 2nd invocation runs faster than the first. Likewise, when you evoke "java" from QSH, then press F12 to return to the command line, then RUNJVA, you'll get the message "Java shell already active in job".

But when it comes to generating a PDF file, it seems that you should consider the cost of instantiating the "class", not just the JVM. So a NEP, using JNI, may be faster.

Just a thought.
