What version of Thunderbird? I can't reproduce that issue at all, but I'm hovering near the bleeding edge on 'Lanikai/3.1.1pre'. Maybe there's an option to trim a quoted quote somewhere that's turned on for you?

The only negative effect I get from the double dashes is that everything following them for the whole rest of the digest is in gray instead of black. Tolerable, but mildly annoying...
