How would RI and foreign constraints help with a valid item that was
just wrong ?

Yeah, we have a product that our users use to do mass updates.  Only
problem so far was when someone created 90,000 items in the item master
for a new product line and put the wrong item class on it... valid class,
passed the logic tests.... still wrong!  Thanks to the integral part that
item class plays it only too a week to run our update program to fix it.
So, 85 sql statements per item finally fixed it right up.  Gotta love the
'power users', one day they are a great asset because they don't bother
you, but when they do, its usually enough work to make up for lost time.

There's a company that sells a product which will read files and do the
same thing. Useful for batch uploads and stuff.

If users want to use spreadsheets to update the iSeries there is a safe
way--

One of our users had a spreadsheet with a lot of updates.  He, being a
'power user,' set up a keyboard macro to pick up the entries from his
spreadsheet and 'enter' them into the standard iSeries green-screen
update program.  This caused no issues-- all of his transactions went
through the normal editing just as if he was typing every keystroke by
hand.  And he didn't have to re-key all of the transactions from his
spreadsheet.
