I agree that the system and the terminal are out of sync, the question
is what is getting them out of sync? This has happened consistently
the
last 3 times they've run the job.

If you said that before, I missed it. Sorry. My message was based upon
this being a glitch.

The programs in question have not
been
changed for the last 10-20 times they've run the job. Nor has their
Rumba telnet software been upgraded. They did upgrade their iSeries
recently, but the job ran fine several times after that before this
failure started occurring.

I wonder if the terminal used to send keepalive, but now does not. I have
not been impressed by IBM's means of silently disconnecting terminals that
aren't sending keepalive - and neither the job nor the terminal becomes
aware of it; the result from both sides is much like you have described.
(In fairness, many (maybe even most) systems have this fault.)

This is not a "remote" connection; the PC running Rumba is in the same
room as the iSeries.

"Remote" has many meanings. If it's not sending keepalives, it may as well
be on the moon, though... it will suffer a communications error as soon as
the i "detects" that is has stopped communicating.

It is also not a long running job -- 5 minutes including the time
required to do before & after tape backups.

I would still submit to batch, but that's me. I agree five minutes is not a
long time, but I also like the saneness of a terminal-free environment. Not
my shop, though, and I certainly don't know its characteristics.
