Works fine for me at v5r4
CREATE TABLE QTEMP/BUCK (EMP INT NOT NULL WITH DEFAULT, TERM_DATE
DATE )
Table BUCK created in QTEMP.
insert into qtemp/buck (emp, term_date) values(12345,NULL)
1 rows inserted in BUCK in QTEMP.

What's the error?

If you not on at least v5r4, it may be that the system isn't auto
casting NULL try
INSERT INTO PAYROLL (EMP, TERM_DATE) VALUES (12345, cast(NULL as date)).

Otherwise if NULL is the default just leave out the column
INSERT INTO PAYROLL (EMP) VALUES (12345).

NULLIF works but it just seems...inelegant.
