Original issue never resolved

I was going to try one more time the manual CD method and make sure I put
the CD's in the correct order (I am pretty sure they were before)

Another thought I could try was copying the Cd's that can't be read to
another CD (well actually they can be read but the install license programs
could not find a file that I can see if on the CD)

I went back through this to see if the original problem had been discovered,
was it?? Converting from lodaing CD's manually to image catalogs (totally
agree with the approach) but did the original problem that cropped up get
resolved. You could essentially be recreating the same problem via image
catalog that was attempted loading cd's manually??

I am not sure when image catalogs came out. You'd have to search the
various infocenters and what not to find this. I did try looking up
VFYIMGCLG in the current infocenter to see if it had a history of when the
command was created and didn't get a hit.

If you can't find it, then I'd refer you again to the software
installation manual for the release you are going to and try to get the
CD's in the order there.

You're going from V5R1 to what again?

Rob,

Thanks for the help, I plan on trying the image catalog method this
weekend.

However, I tried step one:
CRTDEVOPT DEVD(OPTVRT01) RSRCNAME(*VRT) ONLINE(*YES)
and get an error
"Value *VRT for parameter RSRCNAME not a valid name"

Is this not available for me to use on V5R1
or should I use one of the choices *NONE or OPT01?

I_BASE is always first. Which is what should have been first during your
last OS upgrade attempt. Use the image catalog and restart the GO LICPGM,

5, 1. How to use an image catalog is outlined in the software
installation manual.
Basic steps are something like
CRTDEVOPT DEVD(OPTVRT01) RSRCNAME(*VRT)
VRYCFG CFGOBJ(OPTVRT01) CFGTYPE(*DEV) STATUS(*ON)
MD DIR('/imageCatalog')
CRTIMGCLG IMGCLG(VSOMETHING) DIR('/imageCatalog/vsomething')
Stick I_BASE cd in drive
ADDIMGCLGE IMGCLG(VSOMETHING) FROMDEV(OPT01) TOFILE(*GEN)
repeat for each physical cd in the order referred to in the manual. Do
NOT do the cume.
LODIMGCLG VSOMETHING OPTVRT01
GO LICPGM
5, 1
VFYIMGCLG IMGCLG(VSOMETHING) SORT(*YES)
Start your upgrade and go home and monitor it remotely from your HMC. No
need to be there and physically feed it discs. No worry that you'll be 3
discs into the upgrade and find out it's damaged.

Cume:
LODIMGCLG VSOMETHING OPTION(*UNLOAD)
CRTIMGCLG IMGCLG(CUME) DIR('imageCatalog/cume')
ADDIMGCLGE IMGCLGE(CUME) ...
Repeat as necessary.
LODIMGCLG CUME OPTVRT01
VFYIMGCLG IMGCLG(CUME) TYPE(*PTF) SORT(*YES)
GO PTF, 8
LODIMGCLG CUME OPTION(*UNLOAD)

Rob,

Never used this before, but it sounds pretty straight forward.
I'll try this some time later this week (after I get all the CDs loaded)

Do you know if I need to copy the CD's in a specific sequence?
Do I load the I_BASE_01 CD's first?
or the B2984_01 - B2984_09 first followed by L2984_01 - L2984_02 CD's?
Then the N2924_01 secondary language CD

Thanks

John

This weekend I attempted to upgrade our OS

Received error CPA3DE1

Message . . . . : Load a valid volume containing licensed programs in

optical device OPT01 (X G).

Cause . . . . . : The volume currently loaded in the installation device
is not valid for reason 2 when installing licensed programs supported on
the

Work with Licensed Programs (LICPGM) menu.

Reason Code 2 is...
2 -- The volume currently loaded does not contain licensed programs that

can be installed using the Work with Licensed Programs (LICPGM) menu.

Recovery . . . : Check the media label to determine if the volume
contains
licensed programs. Software distribution media containing licensed
programs can be labeled in one of the following ways:

-- Volume Identifier of B29xx_yy.
-- Volume Identifier of L29xx_yy.
-- Volume Identifier of F29xx_yy.
-- Licensed Programs shipped on a single set.
The 29xx indicates the primary language of the system and yy can be any

number.
-- If the volume does not contain licensed programs, load a volume that

does.
-- If the volume contains licensed programs, the QDSETMAP file may not
be
readable. Clean the media and try again. You can check for the QDSETMAP

file by using the Work with Optical Volumes (WRKOPTVOL) command. The
QDSETMAP file should appear in the root directory "/". If it does not,
this
media cannot be used at this time.

Load a volume containing licensed programs and type G to continue the

installation process. Type X if you have no more volumes containing
licensed
programs to load.

Possible choices for replying to message . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . :

X -- No more volumes containing licensed programs.

G -- Continue processing.

So I did WRKOPTVOL on the CD and it shows the file QDSETMAP right where it
is supposed to be in the root directory "/".

I then opened a second set of CD's I just happen to have for the same OS
for
the same machine and I get the same error??

Before attempting the actual update I used the prepare for Install > Work
with Licensed programs for target release and it read the CD's fine
I also did the Display licensed programs for target release and it
displays
the licensed programs I previously selected.

Our primary language is 2984 (English DBCS)
All of the CD's show 2984
My secondary language is 2924 English

Somewhere in the instructions I was told to remove QSYS2924 from our
system
library list before attempting to do the update

I got the error with CD B2984_01

Anyone have any ideas for me?

Thanks

John
