I'll second Rob's comments. About five years ago I acquired an old,
cheap, CISC, black-box AS/400 that was at V3R1 for home use. I added an
ethernet card and was able to get it upgraded to V3R2 and got "current"
with PTF's. I played around with it for awhile but found it lacking
compared to our V5R4 system at work. Ultimately, I decided that it was
more worthwhile to focus my personal development on PC-based web
applications. Unlike PC's, as an individual I can't afford to stay
current (or near-current) on the hardware. From that perspective the
timeshare400 option starts looking a lot better if you want to work on
development. You won't be limited by old technology and what you're
working on/learning will be relevant. I also like being able to lug my
laptop around and work on it anywhere I go.
