I think that's one of the things that most of the last several releases of
both hardware and software have really been targeted to improve.

I have heard recommendations in the past (and I assume they are still true
today) that starting the jvm can be a bite. IOW if you have a looping
process that fire it off one method may be to keep the RPG program (or
whatever) that starts the java program as a data queue program or some
such animal and just feed it that way instead of repeatedly calling it. An
old Craig Pelkie article on using JDBC to access SQL server directly from
the i outlines this well.
