For ROW_NUMBER [aka ROWNUMBER], refer to the SQL OLAP specifications:

I am not sure how helpful that would be for an UPDATE however. It should be able to assist with aforementioned SELECT of CTE, if used to generate a new data file as the result set from the desired join of ROW_NUMBER & RRN between the original file & the fake-data file respectively.
