Aside from journaling & isolation [autocommit + no isolation may enable no journaling at 6.1 ?]... IIRC applications for update will typically require a primary key to know which row to update; it may depend on which driver is being used if just a unique keyed physical [or, though I doubt, perhaps logical] file suffices as an alternative to the actual primary key.
