Whenever a Tape library is connected to iSeries , on each system/LPAR you
will find an entry as TAPMLB01 .Now as you said 3 systems are attached
dedicated to tape so they have direct com lines to tape system . The two
iSeries systems which are sharing the single tape system may be attached in
two ways.

1. They must be using a single BUS to communicate with tape and you have to
change the ownership of Bus attached to IOP associated with tape before you
can use it with any system. Here you have to move the drive manually to
other system whenever there is a need.

2. There are two separate comm lines( Fiber /SCSI) to the same Tape system
and the drive is configured to work as Shared Tape device in BRMS. You
generally configure it on iSeries using BRMS in such a way that device gets
varied on when server requires it and very it off after use. That is the
reason your backup on two system should not run at the same time.

You may want to refer to redbook "Automated Tape Library Planning and
Management " for more information .

Hello,

I have a question regarding tape drive sharing on LPARS.

There AS400 Box(V5R3) has 5 LPARS and 4 Tape Drives. The tape library is
TS3310(Media Class Ultrium 3).We also have BRMS installed for Backup and
Tape Management.

3 of the 4 drives are dedicated to 3 partitions. The other 2 partitions
share
the 4th drive.

Can you please let me know the following:

1.How the 4 th tape drive will be shared between the 2 partitions to take
the backups?.

2.Does this mean that the backups on these 2partitions will take place at
different times?

3.In event of failure of any one of these 4 Tape Drives ,how can the
other
tape drives be moved to the related partition to take the backup?

Many Thanks
Sneha

Jim, you haven't reached some threshold with the group profile, like a
directory or folder full.

Has something changed in folder authority in PTFs via v5r4? I

has always been a part of a group profile (which is not in the
System Distribution Directory). Today the install failed with a
CPF9006 "User not enrolled in system distribution directory...."
I know this worked with the same profile prior to recent cume
updates. Searched ptf cover letters & other areas of IBM Support
- nothing about group profiles related to CPF9006 (maybe it
shouldn't have worked before?)

From the given, should the reader infer the message details for
the CPF9006 recorded the group profile name? Perhaps the specific
details of the message plus the group & user names are best stated
for the most clarity.

Is it possible the user previously had the necessary authority to
the folder, and [per no longer having the private authority held by
the user] only now the failing operation has a need to depend on the
authority available to the group? Has the user profile, since the
last time used for the install, been changed to have either of
OWNER(*GRPPRF) or GRPAUT(*otherthanNONE)? Or perhaps the user,
although verified to be in the directory, has its entry [pending]
being renamed?

If the operation had not been prevented in the past, but has
since been corrected to fail with CPF9006 [i.e. if "maybe it
shouldn't have worked before"], then that would suggest such a
change was one of the security\integrity PTFs which are effectively
not capable of being searched.

How are the tape drives attached?
Fiber attached via a SAN switch?
Fiber directly?
Copper directly?

We use the SAN switch.

Backups need to be timed so they do not conflict. While you may find the
idea of using one of the other tape drives if one of the others are down
you may find that the backup window you have does not allow for that.
Otherwise, why aren't more lpar's sharing the drives? Better to keep
them
on maintenance and call IBM asap when one fails. Worst case is that you
can't run the backup one night.

I just wasted a morning getting a cursor to position to a field in error.

The DSPATR(PC) did not work, as there were CSRLOC entries on the

subfile.

What is the value of such an entry? To better control the location

of the cursor? Sure complicated my life, but maybe I am just used

to the PC way of doing business.

Comments welcome!
