Hi Jeff -

I'm pretty sure that all is not lost. The hardest part for some will be giving up their old twinax console, but we have had no real problems with our HMC once we got it on a regular maintenance schedule.

What I thought I heard in this thread were some issues trying to get Ops console running on a previously configured Windows PC, no real "System i" problems.

We just upgraded our 9406-550 to an 8204-E8A, still a 550 but with all new parts. We replaced the processor, all production IOP's and all production DASD, so it needed a complete unload/reload.

The bottom line is that this was not completely snag-free process, there was some confusion in the order about whether some of the old IOP's were going to be re-used or not, and that caused some trouble when it came time to do the reload. But this is not your father's AS/400, it's a 3-LPAR, 6TB system with 2 tape libraries and 5 ethernet lines, etc.

And now, as Pete said, "It's faster than Cat Sh1t"

"New" setups have always had issues. (I remember one hardware upgrade where they "forgot" the token-ring card.) If simplicity is your goal and you're running one application per system, I don't think you'll have any more trouble than you're used to. Certainly there will be new things to learn, but that's been happening on our system for 20 years, right?

Aaron,

I cannot help you, but I have to say something.

I am NOT looking forward to the day when my company needs to replace the 520 with Power i equipment. The amount of trouble people like you and Lukas and Pete had and are having getting new machines set up and running gives me the willies. I want simplicity, not this new complexity being introduced.

Just my $.02.

I am now in section "Initial IBM i OS configuration" (

Upon first logging in with QSECOFR/QSECOFR it requires you to change
the QSECOFR password. No issue, I did that and proceeded to the next
step of putting the system into manual mode, was prompted by the DST
logon prompt, and I entered QSECOFR and the *new* password. Well, it
didn't take the new password, so I tried QSECOFR as the password - no
go. And now it is telling me "Id disabled" when I try to log in.
When I do an F1 on that message to get more info it just takes me to
the help for the screen, so I don't even have a message id to do a
search on to see how to resolve the issue. This is the only page I
could find, but it requires that I am able to log in to DST to enable
a DST profile - thanks IBM:
