Rob,

It has been to long, and I can't find my notes. I believe someone else has
got it with the hard/soft option on the connection parms. It defaults to
hard, and if the client is not taken down or stopped prior to the server,
then the server (in my case the i) has issues, even if the client is
stopped. I had problems because I only half understood the process, and
learned the hard way about the order that things are stopped or unmounted.
All of this comes only from a faulty memory after discussing this with IBM 6
to 8 months ago (see - I don't even remember how long exactly!)

I'm NOT saying that NFS is bad or don't use it. I just wanted you to be
aware that there is a POTENTIAL issue if bringing it down in the wrong
order, especially if using the IBM defaults when starting NFS on the i with
the default options.

I am not entirely up on the right terms. I was testing how to send files
from the i to a PC based files server, and had NFS running between them.
There seemed to be a limitation that was undesirable at the time. When I
tried to turn everything off again, I got them done in the wrong order,
and
had NFS hung on the i. When I called IBM support, I was told that the
defaults for the MOUNT command on the i were not the desired or best
values
to use, and that I would have to IPL to recover from the error.
