The challenge here is the UI ...

QuickBooks signature and forte is that there is almost no mention of accounting - especially jargon. The user is just doing business, banking, and so forth. - where procedures are illustrated, with pictures and diagrams, and handled with wizards. Of course, that type of UI can also get tedious, once you know what you're doing.

My vision for small organizations and large organizations is somewhat different. Don't have them accumulate software packages where each has its own user profiles - its own authentication, authorization, and navigation mechanics. Have them share all that, as well as common user interface standards - like traditional green-screen interfaces, but using Web 2.0 interfaces, instead.

Make the UI OPEN - so that all sorts of applications can be integrated together, sharing a common DBMS, too.

Small businesses need web servering, email serveing and clients, document management, bookkeeping, customer relationship management, community collaboration, and lots of things that are beyond the scope of a single package, and possibly beyond the scope of a single vendor.

But it befits vendors, consultants, and their packages to come together, under a shared infrastructure.

-Nathan.
