If all they can fill is a 3 car train, that's a pretty sad analogy. BART in
San Francisco uses far longer trains, and they're packed during commute
hours.

And besides cars, what was the competition for the MetroRail? Other rail
systems?

refreshing to see this kind of response.

This reminds me of something that was said about 20 years ago, about Los
Angeles County's then-brand-new MetroRail system in general, and the
just-opened Blue Line in particular.

Right-wing naysayers said that (1) Angelinos are too much in love with
their cars to abandon them for trolleys and subways, (2) even if they
did practically nobody would ride a trolley line that passed through
Watts and Compton, and (3) for those few who would, it would be cheaper
to pay them to drive the freeways than to fund MetroRail.

And what happened? Ten years later, the county had to go through and
extend every station platform on the Blue Line, so they could
accommodate 3-car trains, because 2-car trains were getting too crowded.

And now, even 3-car trains are getting crowded, and Red Line subway
trains are frequently packed.

Let us hope that the FUD-mongers are as successful with the AS/400 as
they have been with LACMTA's MetroRail.
