I asked my IBM rep if I could do multiple LPARs on this machine...

A few years back, I recall hearing some serious performance concerns about running LPARS on single-core servers, and particularly on servers that had no L3 cache. IIRC the concern was something about the cost of clearing cache to swap between IBM i and Linux, for example. That was just anecdotal talk. I've never worked with LPARS. Somebody recommended running LPARS on multi-core servers, ONLY, and dedicating an entire core to a partition.

Another rumor was that Power6 cores are said to support 2 parallel "threads", but the 2nd thread is disabled without L3 cache. Maybe a real expert can respond.
