If you are interested in using database files, display files, and printer files from an ILE or OPM CL application I am expanding the beta program for a new product: Control Language for Files (CLF). A sampling (6 out of 45) of some of the commands provided are:
OpnFCLF - Open a file
ReadRcdCLF - Read a record sequentially or randomly by key
WrtRcdCLF - Write a record
UpdRcdCLF - Update a record
DltRcdCLF - Delete a record
CloFCLF - Close a file
Files can be externally described, program desribed, intermixed with traditional CL file support, used under commitment control (or not), contain null-capable fields, contain variable-length fields, contain subfiles (if *DSPF that is), and a whole lot more. Conditions such as end-of-file, record-not-found, etc can be handled with a MONMSG approach or logical variables (often known as indicators) -- your choice.
