PCI requirement 8.5.2 is: Verify user identity before performing
password resets.
That pretty much makes automatic password resets verboten.

OK, define "Verify user identity". Is it safe to assume that if the
requesting user has access to the email account for the requesting user
then their identity is validated? What if they answer a secret question
too? (First pet, mother's maiden name, etc.). No? Well, have you
validated it if they call the help desk and tell them they are that
user? Surely they wouldn't lie. :-) Do we need DNA before we've
validated identity? I don't think 8.5.2 makes resets verboten at all.
