On a side note, that whole port 2300 may not be the the most secure, but I
don't connect to my i from outside. I use remote connectivity that's
enforced through other security measures to connect to my local workstation
and I do everything from that machine. It's about 40 feet through a wall
from my i servers and it stays up at all times. If you're looking for a
very robust and flexible connection, try that remote KVM solution. We use
that here for some of the servers and we also use the RSA II slimline card
in others, the point is there are lots of options so pick the one that
works for you.

I usually have a shared session started on the HMC for the 3 i5/OS
installs. What I have noticed is that the shared session on the HMC does
not survive an IPL of the i5/OS. I will be signed in to the HMC via a VPN
from home and applying PTFs. After I IPL and close my session, the next
time I log in the HMC shared session has lost it's connection and I have to
create a new shared session.

Anyone see a fix to the HMC to stabilize the sessions?

Shared sessions are also good (although not perfect) if you want to

watch

instruct someone else remotely. Both of you can log in and the person
observing can't see what the person leading is typing but they do get

screen transitions and updates.
