Actually, I was the one who came up with the CL solution. Or at least, the CL solution that was posted on this thread. Would have been even simpler, but the CL compiler didn't seem to like hex constants embedded in string expressions.

PC5250 is Personal Communicator 5250 (or something to that effect), one of two WinDoze-based emulators that came with Client Access since the days when it was called PC Support (the other being the reliable, but unspeakably ugly, RUMBA [the only emulator I've ever seen in which the graphic status line is uglier and more cryptic than the text one!]).

At some point, I've definitely got to put hex entry into our emulator.
