the eternal hope is that IBM will adapt the MSFT approach, starting with IBM i.

WRONG!

IBM learned long ago that you don't compete with Microsoft on
Microsoft's terms. The way to win is to change the terms of the
engagement, and battle on newer fronts. That's why ODF (and OO.o) should
be at or near the top of IBM's battle plan. By pushing the advantages of
open document formats and F/OSS, you cut off the air to proprietary,
closed source technologies. That's where MS is vulnerable.
