From: Jon Paris
Why do you say this Nathan? IBM donated Eclipse to the OS
community ...

IBM did that to gain traction in an IDE market dominated by competitors. Then began putting most of their efforts into proprietary versions of Eclipse (Rational Tools). The key point was that the market was dominated by competitors, and IBM offered bait.

Compared with Sun who fought against OS for Java for the longest
time IBM seem like paragons of virtue to me.

Neither SUN nor IBM seem like paragons of virtue to me. They do what they think is in their best interests, within the constraints of law and market forces.

If SUN were out of the picture, what would keep IBM from building proprietary versions of Java, Java Application Servers, and MySQL?

Nathan.
