In RPG something like %scan for '<' and '>' and rip out the tags and values!

Would work if you're not interested in validation, performance wouldn't be
an issue and free......

Hi Paul

There are the DB2 XML Extenders - gives you SQL access to it - thus,
usable with embedded SQL.

There is the XML Toolkit - various versions have been around for several
years - each contains something that'd probably be compatible with
back-releases.

Rumor has it that both of these inspired Aaron to write his tool <vbg>

Both are from IBM - not expensive, as I recall - I don't recall what
ways of processing xml that they use.
