Are you subject to SOX, HIPPA, PCI, ect. ?

Then you've got a very good case that being on a currently supported
version of the OS is required.

Management needs a more compelling reason to go to V4R5 than the fact that our OS is ''old". It takes a lot of time and effort to do an upgrade so they want to know what it buys us. Typically, we're forced to do upgrade the OS because of new hardware. Our hardware (9406-520) is performing more than adequately though, so the question is, how long do we ride things out? Or do we? We were pondering upgrades one year ago and now we're on the same OS and hardware. If we can ride things out for one year; what about two more years? Management would like to know how they should budget this year and the next; I'm sure.

Test that. Call 800-IBM-SERV and tell them you're running V5R2 and see
how far you get.

You have been able to order V5R4 for quite some time now. You can even
order V6R1.

They'll only tell you to upgrade if you have a new problem on V5R3 for
which they don't have a fix for, correct? They still take your calls and
see if there's an existing fix, right Paul?

Secondly, will V5R4 be available to order on May 1 or do I have to order
it before then?

Why would you not upgrade to at least V5R4?

If on May 1st, you have a problem that is V5R3 related, IBM will tell you
to
call back after you do an OS upgrade. I hope you have stayed current on
your
software maintenance agreement.

With image catalogs, your downtime will be minimized. Google SC41-5120-09
to
get the OS upgrade guide.
