I understand there are cases where folks are dealing with bad database design, monolithic
spagetti code, and other problems. But the least disruptive and probably best solution is to
stick with RPG and the native environment, but change your database and coding practices,
and gradually migrate from 5250 (where warranted) to new browser based interfaces.

I'm sure we're all in this boat, to some extent. But how long have we
known about, and had examples of, writing 5250 apps using the MVC
pattern? Because if you're using the MVC pattern, switching out the
view is not that big a deal. And now IBM gives us three ways to do it
(CGI, Java, PHP), plus any number of third-party development tools.

We have plenty of old, monolithic programs that we've written. Some
are as old as I am. If we want to modernize them, we rewrite them.
Pain in the neck? Sure. On the other hand, they've long since paid
for themselves. Gotta reinvest at some point.
