Money is in the conversion.

There is very little money, by comparison, to computer vendors for happy
customers that want to stick with tried & true reliable systems.

Many years ago HP similar camplaign got many compnaies to switch from S/34 &
S/36 to an HP "look alike". Then after they had squeezed last cent out of
conversion money, the HP replacement package was abandoned, leaving
thousands of HP customers out in the cold.

I do not now remember the name of that system.
Oh they tried to get those customers to switch to a different HP system that
was quite different from what they were abandoning.

While the IBM future is bleak, at least they have the reputation of
providing upward compatibility long after any competitor might abandon such
support.
