During May - August 2004, IBM announced the release of V5R3 i5/OS, formerly
named OS/400. This renaming highlights the release's capability to support
the current technology of IBM eServer iSeries systems and the new POWER5
technology-based IBM eServer i5 servers.

*Hardware*

- *New IBM eServer i5 model 520. model 550, and model 570 servers:
*Includes new or enhanced Input/Output device support.
- *New Hardware Management Console (HMC):* eServer i5 models are
equipped with HMC, which is used for configuring and managing LPAR, Capacity
on Demand, and special diagnostics on the system. A single HMC can manage
i5/OS, AIX 5L, and POWER5-Linux partitions.
- *Updated hardware and software packaging options:* (Introduced during
2003) This includes 520 Express Editions and Standard and Enterprise
editions on the 520, 550 and 570 models. Standard and Enterprise editions
may be used on different processors on the same system. There are also
model-specific Capacity Backup, High Availability, Solution, and Domino
editions.
- *New PCI Ultra controllers and Ethernet adapters: * The new eServer
i5 models support current and newer technology I/O devices, I/O Towers and
Enterprise Storage Servers (ESSs) already supported on 800, 810, 825, 870
and 890 models.
- *Upgrades from 8xx models*

- *Run i5/OS, Linux, AIX 5L on POWER5 systems, and Intel-based Linux or a
Windows operating system on an iSeries IXS or an xSeries system attached
using the iSeries IXA.* New releases of AIX 5L and POWER Linux are
required for POWER5. Additional Linux distributions have been announced to
run on an iSeries IXS or an xSeries system attached using the iSeries IXA.
- *iSeries Navigator enhancements:* Includes management of single or
multiple iSeries systems.
- *IBM Virtualization Engine™: * For multiple operating system
environments, share resource management and maximize utilization with this
set of technologies and services. IBM Director Multiplatform, one of the
included services, has a wide range of functions for managing your
infrastructure.
- *Expanded single-system sign-on (V5R2):* Single-system sign-on
is achieved through Enterprise Identity Mapping (EIM) and the use of a
non-iSeries Kerberos Key Distribution Center server for authentication.
V5R3 enhancements include an iSeries system being used as the Kerberos Key
Distribution Center server, the use of EIM with new Identity Tokens for
single sign-on among WebSphere Applications, server-based applications such
as iSeries Access for Web, and WebFaced applications

*Deliver without disruption*

- *Extended Capacity on Demand (CoD) leadership:* Now includes memory and
processor reserve, and Trial Capacity on Demand.
- *IBM DB2 Universal Database (UDB):* V5R3 delivers robust, open database
solutions with DB2 UDB. Enhancements include expanded utilization of the SQE
(new query optimizer introduced during V5R2), increased integration of SQL
functions and interfaces with RPG and COBOL applications, and additional
industry standards. Support for Microsoft ADO.NET interfaces to IBM DB2
Universal Database (UDB) on iSeries systems is also included.
- *Expanded continuous operations environment with fault-tolerant
technologies:* Details on extended Independent Auxiliary Storage Pool
(IASP) support with remote (cross-site) mirroring, and extended Save While
Active options, to perform backups with active transactions (partial
transactions). Also included is support for ESS logical disk drive (LUN)
multipath I/O capabilities (multiple iSeries adapters interface to the same
ESS).
- *iSeries Navigator and Management Central enhancements*
- *Simple Network Time Protocol (SNTP) updates:* iSeries systems can now
be a server and a client.
- *New save and restore options*
- *Improved integration with BRMS and Advanced Job Scheduler*
- *Backup and Recovery Media Services (BRMS) enhancements:* New save
options, such as saving a system in dedicated mode from a batch job (can now
be unattended). This also includes backup and recovery of partial
transactions.
- *Advanced Job Scheduler enhancements*
- *Performance Tools enhancements*
- *New time zone support:* Includes automatic changes between standard
and daylight savings times.
- *i5/OS enablement for virus scanning: * An application can now perform
an automated virus scan function of the Integrated File System files.
- *V5R3 Bytware StandGuard AntiVirus product: * IBM and
Bytware use cooperative marketing for this antivirus product.
