Would you mind giving an example. I've never come across a technique to reformat data in the logical and would like to learn how to do so.

There are examples in the IBM documentation. See the InfoCentre. Start at Database->Programming->Database Programming->Setting up database files->Describing logical file record formats.

You'll see it discusses the reformatting that is supported by logical files.

I'm also extremely curious about PUTting an LF on System-A and being able to read the data residing on System-B. Was I incorrect when I said that an LF is nothing more than an index, which in and of itself contains no actual data? Again, I'm asking so I can learn something new - even if it throws something I thought I knew into a dustbin.

The concept you are missing is that although FTP is "File Transfer Protocol" it doesn't transfer files. It transfers data. When you 'point' FTP at a logical file it transfers the data surfaced by that logical--essentially a remote system copy operation.

This also explains why you can FTP to printer files or direct to printer ports if you want.

Simon Coulter.
